Culture

Religion and Culture are totally interwoven in Sri Lanka: Buddhist Temples, Hindu Kovils, Mosques, and Churches stand together. Seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites embellish the island: Anuradhapura, Sigiriya, Dambulla, Polonnaruwa, Yapahuwa, Kandy, Galle, and Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve. They span 2,500 years of history. The sacred Banyan Tree (Ficus bengalensis)  is at Anuradhapura, where Lord Buddha attained elightenment. World’s first sanctuary was established at Mihintale. The noted festival (August Moon) is celebrated at Kandy.
